Finding balance in our Yoga practice.
Session 2: Sthira, Sukham Asana. Finding balance in our practice.
In this session we look at Patanjali's advice on Asana. The physical postures we practice in our yoga classes are Asana. The term Asana can be translated to seat. To sit comfortably within oneself.
Patanjali also explains to us that Asana must have the quality of Sthira meaning steadiness and strength and Sukham meaning ease and comfort. We look at ways to find the balance of these qualities in our asana practice and also how this can be translated to our day to day lives.
There is a short physical practice in this session demonstrating how to bring the qualities of sthira and sukham into practice, you can join in or simply listen and watch.
Task: To ask yourself next time you are practicing Asana:
- 'Am I finding a good balance of Sthira (steadiness and strength) and Sukham (comfort, joy and ease)?'
- 'Where in my body may need more strength and effort (Sthira) and where can I relax and ease off (Sukham)?'
